Take note – story published 8 years ago

Latvia is in the middle of a yearly hockey mania with the 2016 Ice Hockey World Championships having started in Moscow on Friday.

Latvia opened the championships Friday, suffering a 2:1 OT loss against Sweden.

While Saturday Latvia lost 4:3 in a thrilling game culminating in shootouts against the Czech Republic, which managed to drag the game into OT by scoring a tying goal just 59 seconds before the end of the third period.

Latvia ranks 5-8th in Group A at the moment with two points in two games.

Latvia has yet to play Russia, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark and Kazakhstan in the group stage. The next game takes place May 9 against Russia at 4.15 p.m. Latvian time.

Hockey is hugely popular in Latvia - if you're visiting at this time, you'll be seeing Old Rīga pubs crawling with loud hockey fans watching the games by a pint of beer.

Latvia's biggest achievement at the Ice Hockey World Championships is seventh place. Team Latvia finished eight at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
