Pauls and Nelsons awarded highest state honor

The Latvian Chapter of Orders has conferred the highest civil service order of the Republic of Latvia, the Order of the Three Stars, to a number of artists, including classical conductor Andris Nelsons and composer Raimonds Pauls, reported LETA Friday.

The Chapter of Orders said that Nelsons and Pauls have been awarded the Order of the Three Stars 2nd Class for their merits to the Latvian state.

The Order of the Three Stars 3rd Class has been conferred to opera singers Aleksandrs Antonenko and Kristine Opolais, pianist and Professor Dr. Art. Sergejs Osokins, as well as Dr.oec. Irina Pilvere, rector of the Latvian University of Agriculture.

Raimonds Pauls is a legendary Latvian composer, pianist and cultural activist. He turned 80 in January.

While conductor Andris Nelsons received the prestigious Grammy Award in the Best Orchestral Performance category in February.
