Rīgas Pasaules filmu festivāls (Rīga World Film Festival) 2020 will celebrate its 7th year with a new cycle of film screenings, workshops, and discussions, Kino Bize announced September 10.

The film festival will take place September 17-20 at art house cinema Kino Bize, located in the heart of Riga’s Art Nouveau district.

RPFF 2020 focuses on the body: sensuous body experience while watching or making films, as well as films whose visual approach creates a bodily presence. The films of the festival program Filming Bodies : Bodies Filming will, through their content or form, address the ways in which the filmmaker’s body is integral to the process of filmmaking, that offer a creative engagement with the politics of the body, and that address the viewers’ corporeal capabilities.

The festival program will include also a film retrospective of innovatory Dutch filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich who developed a distinctive single shot physical method of moving with camera. Inspired by the films and pedagogy of Helmrich, filmmakers Marta Kucza and Daniel Allen will curate a workshop “Moving Camera” to practice embodied camera movements. The workshop will take place on September 12-16. Apply for the workshop here.

The festival program available on Kino Bize website. After film screenings, spectators will have the opportunity to take part in discussions with the directors.

RPFF is an annual film festival aimed towards exploring the intersections between cinema and ethnography. It is a space where practitioners and the general public can explore various aspects of the process of making films, visualizing anthropology, and capabilities of cinema to convey an experience on its own terms.
