If you hear a more harmonious sound than usual emanating from the area of Latvia's government headquarters, the reason is not new-found political unity but the installation of a new "singing sculpture" just outside the building.

On Monday, to celebrate the upcoming XI Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Celebration, artist Ivars Mailītis unveiled the "Sound pipes" sculpture.

In fact the sonorous object also pays tribute to two other cultural landmarks: the Nordic and Baltic Song Festival and the International Folklore Festival "Baltica 2015" by sending sounds out among the less musical sounds of the Brivibas boulevard traffic.

The large-sized metal pipes in the shape pf Latvia will be in place from June 15 to July 20, after which they will be moved to a location in Madona region.

Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival takes place every five years. This year's takes place in Riga from 6 to 12 July, with around 37,890 participants.
