Small town in Latvia is Europe's best city, says popular blogger

Take note – story published 4 years ago

In a claim that is difficult to independently verify but undoubtedly correct, a popular online blogger from Algeria has nominated the small town of Cēsis in northern Latvia as the best city in Europe.

Nour Brahimi describes herself as "The first Algerian Female travel vlogger" and records her visit to the very fairest part of our fair land in a vlog you can watch above. Nour encounters traditional food and drink, experiences an essential pirts (Latvian sauna) and numerous other treats as part of a tour laid on for international travel bloggers, all of which she greets with boundless enthusiasm in a video titled "Latvia | Cesis: Best city in europe !! ❤️? هنا سأقضي شهر العسل"

It is of some concern to us that in another description of the video's content she calls it only "one of the best cities in Europe" but this is probably a typing error.

For while Paris, Rome and Barcelona undoubtedly have their attractions, Cēsis (population 18,000), is better than any of them. Without wishing to cause offense, it's better than Florence, better than Budapest, better than Madrid, Edinburgh, London, Berlin and Vienna.

And at risk of instant and painful retribution from our colleagues, it's also better than the Latvian capital, Rīga. Only just, mind you, but better nonetheless.

After all, which of those renowned metropolises can boast the winning combination of a castle, several fairly acceptable cafes, a library, a concert hall, a couple of black swans in a pond, and the name "Cēsis"? None.

It is pure coincidence that our editor also happens to live in Cēsis.
