Three for the Weekend: Barricades, Charity, Food

Take note – story published 1 year ago

This weekend in Latvia is the beginning of the time Latvia commemorates the 1991 barricades, which served a crucial role in the Latvian fight for freedom, and a time to think about being together as one.

Charity

At a time when many are in need, take some time to review your closets and shelves for items in good condition which you might no longer use but others could be happy about. The charity shop Otrā elpa has launched a campaign in collaboration with Omniva so anyone can ship their donations for free across Latvia. More on how to do it is on our other story.

Barricade events

Over the weekend and next week, Rīga City Council has announced an extensive program of commemorative events, including concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, and others. It is worth checking out an outline of the program on our other story, as well as other municipality websites for commemorative events.

Food

An indispensable part of the barricades was sharing food with those around you. In case you are looking to learn some new flavors, the Āgenskalns Market is hosting a Georgia day on January 15, with traditional food at the market, masterclasses on how to cook khinkali and khachapuri, while representatives of the local community will have prepared various creative activities where you can learn more about the culture.
