Three for the Weekend in Latvia: snow, music, literature

Take note – story published 2 years ago

December has begun with plenty of snow so it is safe to assume many will be out skiing, skating, sledding or snowman-making, but in case the snow is not your cup of tea, here are some events to enjoy this weekend.

Literature events

On December 3 and 4, the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia in collaboration with the National Library of Latvia will be holding a virtual conference titled “Regīna Ezera and Eastern European Literature”. Regīna Ezera is one of the most significant Latvian authors of prose, equally accomplished as a writer in the novel, short prose, journalism and diary genres.

The conference will be streamed live on 3rd and 4th December on LNB.lv. Full information is available at the Latvian National Library website: https://www.lnb.lv/en/international-conference-dedicated-writer-regina-ezera and on our other story.

Also, as reported earlier, the annual prose festival is taking place December 2 to 12, offering daily events on the festival's website, on the Facebook page of Prose Readings and on the Internet portals Satori.lv and Delfi.lv.

Christmas markets

The first Christmas markets are in town in case you want to prepare in a timely manner. Already this weekend, there will be a fair at the Āgenskalns Market and in Vērmanes dārzs. Check out some local producers' food, clothes, decors – all you might need to get some nice things for yourself and your loved ones.

Beethoven and Vasks on electric guitar

On December 3 at Lielā ģilde and December 4 at GORS (Rēzekne), a concert for the chamber orchestra and electric guitar will take place, with pieces by Pēteris Vasks (Musica Appasionata) and Ludwig Van Beethoven (Grosse Fuge, Op. 133). The electric guitar solo will be played by the Korean-American artist JIJI.
