Take note – story published 3 years ago

Come December, cultural venues have closed, fairs and markets have been canceled, temperatures are dropping lower. It is the perfect time to enjoy the broad array of online events in Latvia!

Spīķeri Jazz live

Friday December 4, at 19:00, Latvian Radio bigband and vocalist Beāte Zviedre's jazz concert will be streamed live from Spīķeri concert hall. The program will feature contemporary jazz artist pieces - Jievaras Jasinskis (Lithuania), Raul Sööt (Estonia) as well as Latvian Radio bigband artistic director Kārlis Vanags' original compositions.

The concert will be streamed on Facebook Live.

Poetry without borders

"Poetry without borders" is an international poetry festival focused on contemporary poetry, held in Rīga. This year it has moved online for obvious reasons.

Saturday December 5, at 13:00 - 16:00, performances by eleven poets from Latvia, Russia, and China, reading in their respective languages, will be streamed live.

You can see the list of poets and their biographies on the event's Facebook page, where the event will also be streamed.

The Philosophy of Furniture

Philosopher Ainārs Kamoliņš' book "The Philosophy of Furniture" will be performed (broadcasted online) on December 5 at 19:00. It will be read in English by journalist Kārlis Streips. According to the author himself, the point of departure for the book has been Edgar Allan Poe’s essay with the same title "The Philosophy of Furniture" (published 1840). As Kamoliņš puts it: “Furniture can allegorically describe the subject's inner world - after all, furniture, like one’s consciousness, stores thoughts, and holds history”.

More information  in English can be seen on the Facebook page.
