New stamp dedicated to ancient rafting trade

On April 12, Latvian Postal Service (Latvijas Pasts, LP) will issue a new postage stamp dedicated to the intangible cultural heritage of Latvia – the Gauja rafters, said LP.

A special envelope will also be issued.

 

The nominal value of the new postage stamp is EUR 1.88 and is intended to cover consignments of Group 12 countries in the weight category up to 20 grams, while the postage stamp issue amounts to 25,000 copies. A special envelope of 500 copies has also been issued with the postage stamp.

The author of the stamp and envelope design is artist Ģirts Grīva.

For a long time, the River Gauja was important waterway for rafting timber to Rīga. The ancient rafting trade has been included in the Latvian intangible cultural heritage list and in the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage lisst.
