Supernova will start exploding in Latvia this weekend

Fans of  three-minute pan-continental pop songs are set for a treat this weekend with the start of the main elimination phase of Latvia's Eurovision selection process.

The first Latvian semi-final to decide who gets a ticket to ride to Liverpool for the Eurovision semi-final takes place at 21:10 on LTV1 under the 'Supernova' banner. The show will be hosted by the likeable duo of Ketija Šēnberga un Lauris Reiniks.

A supernova is a star that explodes spectacularly for a relatively brief period before collapsing under its own weight, often turning into a black hole.

In all, fourteen acts are competing over two semi finals. There were originally fifteen acts but one was found to be ineligible shortly after being announced as a semi-finalist, as previously reported by LSM.

The selection process itself is unusual and in democratic terms, decidedly authoritarian. Which acts make it through to the final will be decided by a combination of telephone voting by the television viewing audience and what is described as an expert jury.

However, viewers are allowed to vote multiple times – the Eurovision equivalent of ballot stuffing – and the jury is completely anonymous, making it impossible to know for example if they have any pre-existing professional or personal connections to the competing acts, or indeed the nature and credibility of their expertise. Their identities will only be revealed at the time of the Eurovision finals. The justiication for the anonymity of this powerful cabal is given as "security reasons", though the nature of the security threat posed against people weighing the merits of pop songs has not been made clear.

"Entry of songs and performers into the semi-finals of the "Supernova" competition was determined by a jury selected by LTV, which includes representatives of the Latvian music industry, events and television, as well as foreign professionals. Due to security reasons, again this year LTV will reveal the names of the jury representatives only after the international Eurovision Song Contest in May," said organizers.

It was recently confirmed that whoever does get the nod to represent Latvia will be competing in the first semi-final in Liverpool on May 9.
