Latvian Olympic Committee president steps down

The President of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOK), Žoržs Tikmers, has decided to leave his post and put down his mandate, the LOK said on Wednesday, May 17.

The extraordinary session of the LOK General Assembly on May 26 is scheduled to assess information on Tikmers' potential conflict of interest in alleged supplies to LOK from companies related to Tikmers.

Latvian Television's Sports News reported earlier that several companies related to Tikmers have allegedly been long-term suppliers to the LOK and the Olympic centers under its auspices. Some of them had been active at a time when Tikmers was vice president and secretary-general, but a few - when he was already president of LOK.

Tikmers has denied the suspicion of a potential conflict of interest.

Tikmers announced that LOK has worked in good faith for the development of the sports sector and has not violated any regulatory enactments of Latvia, but at the same time, he has made mistakes and takes responsibility for them. Tikmers believes that a misconception has been created about his activities.

“In the past, around my name, half-truth-based talks were expertly organized and, creating a wrong opinion of my work. Unfortunately, the fight for the redeployment of seats and resources will follow,” Tikmers said. “Backstage fights, mutual resentments, and the shadow of suspicion certainly do not contribute to healthy athletic spirit and results. It is clear that the time we all worked together as e team has ended. Like2 anyone, I've made mistakes too. Taking responsibility, as well as in order to protect Latvian athletes and also my family from behind-the-scenes gossip and unjustified insults, I have decided to lay down the presidential powers of the Latvian Olympic Committee."
