Latvia's women footballers ready for a new campaign

The captain of the national team, Sandra Voitāne, looked forward to the game in a conversation with Latvian Radio, expressing confidence in the team's strength, which should allow them to fight for victories in the tournament.

Voitāne said the newly introduced Nations League will allow the Latvian national team to compete against opponents of similar strength, which in turn gives the team more motivation, opening up opportunities to advance to a higher level group. The Latvian national team debuts in the Nations League at the lowest C level, where they will also have to play against Moldova and Andorra in the group.

"Most of our girls are fast and I think we will give them [Malta] big problems," said Voitane. "We have a very good attack, we work well at set pieces, we have scored a few goals from set pieces. We also defend well in front of goal. In general, you can feel that the team has played more together and understands each other more."

"I want to play well and show all the strength that I have", Voitäne smiled. "I feel like this year is going to start well for us. I really really hope we get a win."

UPDATE: Despite a good performance by Latvia, who twice hit the woodwork, the match finished 1:0 to Malta.
