Crunch time for Latvia's hockey hopes Tuesday

Large parts of Latvia are likely to grind to a temporary halt Tuesday night when the national ice hockey team plays what is likely to be a crunch fixture against an in-form Switzerland side.

The final game in the group stage of the IIHF World Championship will see Latvia needing to secure at least one point to proceed to the knockout stages of the tournament – unless Norway can do them a favor earlier in the day by preventing Slovakia taking maximum points from their match-up.

Latvia are the favorites to qualify at the expense of the Slovaks who need to beat the Norwegians in regular time and then bank on Latvia losing to the already-qualified Swiss in regular time. If that happened, both Latvia and Slovakia would have 11 points each, but Slovakia would qualify because they won the head-to-head earlier in the tournament.

The duel between Slovakia and Norway can be followed live from 12:10 with the match between Latvia and Switzerland later in the day can be seen live on LTV7 and LSM.lv from 19:30.

You can find full details and coverage at LSM's dedicated ice hockey section and the official world championship website.
