Another Latvian NBA star in the making as Dairis Bertans signs for Pelicans

Basketball player Dairis Bertāns has become the latest Latvian to join the ranks of the world's top basketball league, the NBA in the United States.

Bertans has signed for the New Orleans Pelicans according to an official NBA news release March 2.

"The New Orleans Pelicans announced today that the team has signed guard Dairis Bertāns. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed," the statement said.

"Bertāns, 6-4, 183, has spent his entire professional career in Europe with stops in Latvia, Italy, Spain and Turkey. Most recently, the Latvian native has appeared in 37 games for Olympia Milano of Italy, averaging 6.1 points while shooting .495 from three-point range."

Bertāns will wear No. 45 for the Pelicans. His brother, Dāvis Bertāns, currently plays for the San Antonio Spurs.

Four Latvians are on NBA rosters at present, the others being Kristaps Porziņģis and Rodions Kurucs.

The Pelicans are currently in 13th place in the NBA's Western Conference standings with 29 wins and 36 losses.
