'Ghetto Games' to expand beyond Rīga this summer

The popular street sports festival/tournament 'Ghetto Games' will be organized not only in Rīga but also in Daugavpils, Valmiera, and Rēzekne, Latvian Television reported May 30.

Ghetto Games representatives got the Olympic gold last year in 3x3 basketball. The next stop is football, leader of Ghetto Games Raimonds Elbakjans told LTV. The key is to give the foundation and opportunity to young people, and not only in Rīga this summer.

“Our main task is to raise cool, passionate, mindful, attractive young people. If they win the Olympics – even better,” he said.

This summer, Daugavpils, Valmiera and Rēzekne municipalities have agreed to the organization of the games.

There will be events with five different sports, as well as the popular “free-speech fight”. “I think it will be a good adventure when, in each region, Latgale, Vidzeme and Kurzeme and, of course, every young person in Riga will have the opportunity to come and get inspired,” said Elbakjan.

Dancers are also planning to reach new peaks. The usual competition this summer will be more spectacular, with more participants and jury professionals from other countries. The head of Ghetto Dance, Ruslans Ļevchenko, said: “We are planning to come back quite powerfully. Before that, there was a pandemic, it was also difficult for dancers to develop. The level will be not only at the Baltic level but at the global level. Let's give everyone a chance to fight on the big stage."
