The Latvian national ice hockey team won its first game at the third attempt in the IIHF World Championships May 16 with a 3:2 win against Norway in a hard-fought match.

The win preserves the chances for Latvia to advance to the quarter-finals in the tournament which is being held in Finland, following losses to the USA and Finland.

Forward Rūdolfs Balcers was named the best player in the Latvian national team against Norway.

The Latvian national team, led by head coach Harijs Vītoliņš, will still have to play against the Czech Republic, Austria, Great Britain and Sweden in Tampere. The next game against the Czechs will be on Thursday.

You can find full highlights, fixtures and news at the official IIHF World Championships site and the dedicated LSM sports pages.
