Latvia's summer of sporting success shows every sign of continuing with the national women's basketball team progressing to the quarter finals of the Eurobasket championships with a surprise victory over reigning champions Serbia in the Czech Republic.

Latvia were unfancied to progress further in the championships but have been improving with every game and pulled off a massive upset to run out winners by 75-70.

Kristine Vitola (19 points) and Anete Steinberga (18 points) both had outstanding games, but it was the team effort that paid off lit it up during the last period and finished with a team-high 19 points, but it was Anete Steinberga who continued her rich vein of form with an eye-catching 18 points and 11 boards.

Indeed it turned out to be a great day for underdogs in the competition with Greece and Slovakia also beating opponents who were thought to be much stronger than themselves, namely Russia and Ukraine. Italy narrowly avoided falling victim to Hungary 49-48.
