Latvia's tennis player Anastasija Sevastova (WTA 15) has advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after defeating Varvara Lepchenko (WTA 64) 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Her next opponent will be Russia's Maria Sharapova (WTA 48).

Hopes are getting higher for two of Latvia's contestants at the Australian Open as 2017 Roland-Garros winner Jeļena (known in Latvia as Aļona) Ostapenko breezed through the first round and will face China's Duan Ying-Ying (WTA 100) in the second.

The Australian Open in Melbourne takes place until January 28 with a prize pool of around €36 million.
