Seventh straight loss for Latvia's soccer team

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia's national soccer team slumped to its seventh loss in a row June 12 against neighboring Estonia.

The friendly match in Riga saw the hosts take a 1-0 lead into the break at half time thanks to a goal from Davis Ikaunieks, only to squander it in the second half and lose 1-2 at the final whistle.

After some hopeful signs during last week's 0-3 defeat to European Champions Portugal, featuring Cristiano Ronaldo, in a World Cup qualifying game, the well-drilled Estonian team delivered a salutary wake-up call.

At times the Latvian team seemed content to sit back and invite Estonia to build attack after attack, with apparently no game plan of their own.

It was only the second time the Estonian team has beaten Latvia in 22 meetings since the restoration of independence, yet even the most one-eyed spectator would be hard pressed to deny the visitors deserved the victory.

Seven straight defeats equals the worst run in Latvian footballing history.

Adding further to the misery, on June 10 the national Under 21 side were defeated by Andorra.
