Latvia added to a year of notable sporting success December 4 with weightlifter Artūrs Plēsnieks claiming a silver medal in the world weightlifting championships being held in the United States of America.

In the 105 kilo class Ventspils-born Plēsnieks finished just behind Iran's weightlifter Ali Hashimi, who became the world champion with a lift of 404 kilograms (183 + 221), with Plēsnieks just two kilos behind.

Speaking to LTV December 5, the lifter said he was ''pleased to be among the medals'' after a tough time recently with injuries and expressed thanks to all the doctors and trainers who had made it possible for him to compete.

It is the second medal Latvia has won in Anaheim after Rebekah Koha's bronze medal in the 58 kilo class.
