Online holiday rentals were booming in Latvia in 2023

Eurostat data published April 3 says that in 2023 more than 1.4 million nights of accommodation were booked in Latvia using online booking platforms Airbnb, Booking.com, Expedia Group and TripAdvisor.

During 2023, guests spent 678.6 million nights in short-term rental accommodation (excluding hotels and campsites) across the European Union booked via these online platforms. This corresponds to a 13.8% increase compared with 2022 (596.5 million nights).

Latvia recorded 1,434,010 such booking in the year as a whole, with around half that number (700,849) occurring during the peak season of the third quarter from July to September (inclusive).

In fact Latvia narrowly beat Estonia (1.39 million) but trailed Lithuania (1.87 million) in the number of bookings made via these online platforms.

Double-digit percentage growth in booking numbers was recorded in all four quarters in Latvia (copared to the corresponding quarter of 2022) in 2023, with the third quarter performing particularly strongly (+29.5%). Over the year as a whole there was growth of 21.6 % compared to 2022, when the number of guest nights comprised 1.18 million, and 7.2 % more than in 2019 before the pandemic, when the number of guest nights reached 1.34 million.

In 2023 1.1 million or 76.6 % of guest nights were booked by non-residents, but 336 thousand or 23.4 % – by Latvian residents. Compared to 2022, a rise was observed in the number of guest nights booked both by non-residents (of 29.2 %) and by residents (1.9 %). Compared to 2019, the number of nights booked by residents has doubled, but the number of nights booked by non-residents – reduced by 6.1 %.

Last year, the length of bookings made via collaborative economy platforms was 3.3 nights on average for non-resident visitors and 1.8 nights for Latvian residents.

The most popular regions for short-term rental accommodation booked via online platforms in the third quarter of 2023 were Jadranska Hrvatska in Croatia (23.7 million nights), Andalucía in Spain (14.0 million nights), and the French Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (12.2 million nights).

In the same quarter, among the top 20 regions, 6 were in France, 5 each in Spain and Italy, 2 in Greece and 1 region each in Croatia and Portugal.
