Pea protein plant project to be launched in Jelgava, Latvia

Latraps Agricultural Services Cooperative has signed an investment agreement with Pfeifer & Langen International B.V., one of the European leaders in the food industry, on the development of a pea protein isolate plant in Jelgava, "Latraps" Communications Manager Zane Berķe told LSM.lv on March 7.

The company's development plan envisages that the "ASNS Ingredient" pea protein plant will start production at the end of 2026.

For sustainability and health reasons, many consumers prefer plant-based foods and there is a growing demand for alternative proteins. For the agricultural industry, this means looking for the most effective substitutes found in plant products. Peas are recognized as the most suitable protein crop for our region and climatic conditions, and pea protein isolate is the most sought-after raw material for meat and dairy substitutes, Latraps explained.

The ASNS Ingredient project for pea protein isolate production has several benefits, which will have a positive impact on the Latvian economy due to the high export capacity and the development of production in Latvia, Latraps says.

71 new jobs will be created and several service industries will be involved.

"Latraps forecasts that more than 1,500 farms could be supplied with raw materials. This project will launch the production of a high-value product in Latvia, which will open up new opportunities for the whole agricultural sector and for those working in it.

"The signing of a cooperation and investment agreement with Pfeifer & Langen, one of the European leaders in the food industry, is an important step in the launch of the project. This cooperation confirms the scale, relevance, and perspective of the project. ASNS Ingredient is more than just a production site. It is a symbol of our shared vision of an innovative, greener and more export-oriented Latvia," emphasized Roberts Strīpnieks, Chairman of the Board of Latraps.
