First 'contactless store' opens in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Fuel retailer Neste opened what it claimed was Latvia’s first ever entirely self-service store July 27, entering a new retail segment into the bargain.

The new Neste Easy Deli contactless self-service store in Rīga offers food and drinks rather than gas and screen wash. There will be a total of five such stores in Latvia – two in Riga and one each in Salaspils, Ogre and Tīnūži. The total investment in these stores is worth 500 000 euros according to the company.

“Last year, we saw a sudden change in personal shopping behavior due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, we also experienced a rapid evolution of technologies... These concept stores will offer the convenience of a new, fast, safe and simple shopping experience around the clock,” said Armands Beiziķis, SIA “Neste Latvija” Chairman of the Board.

The new concept stores use advanced RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology for contactless self-service, which simultaneously scans all customer’s purchases, for example, through a shopping bag or a backpack.

The stores will have no shopping bags, freshly made takeaway meals will be offered in packaging made of environment-friendly materials, and disposable cups and lids are also made of eco-friendly materials.

These fully automated stores can be accessed using the Neste mobile app, which acts as an entry key. Purchases can be paid for with a bank card.

Neste Easy Deli will operate 24/7 in Riga (Lielirbes 30 and Brivibas 253), Ogre (Rigas 11a), Salaspils (Zviedru 1C), and Tinuzi (“Baroni”, Tinuzu parish). For detailed information on Neste Easy Deli: https://www.neste.lv/lv/easy-deli.
