EUR 4 million channeled to fix August storm damage

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The government allocated more than €4 million on Tuesday, October 10, to local authorities so they could cover the damage caused by the storm on August 7. This is only the first part of the compensation.

Eight municipalities – Daugavpils City, Augšdaugava, Dobele, Jelgava, Limbaži, Madona, Smiltene, and Tukums municipality – turned to the responsible Ministry for assistance. The government allocated €4,063,587 from contingency funds to these municipalities.

Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Inga Bērziņa (New Unity) said this is only the first part to cover the damage from state budget resources. “There will definitely be additional funding needed,” Bērziņa noted.

The money is mainly allocated to the damage caused to municipal infrastructure, as well as to support residents and to cover waste management costs. The largest beneficiaries are the municipalities most affected by the storm – the municipalities of Dobele and Augšdaugava.

Municipalities have already paid out this funding from their budgets, and along with government support, they will recover some of the expenses.
