Latvian brewers rally for their beer necessities

The Latvian Society of Independent Brewers (LNAB), carrying big barrels, on Thursday, February 15, took a march from Aldaru (Brewers') Street in old Riga to the Saeima and Riga City Council to hand over letters asking to save the local beer industry, the LNAB reported.

Brewers say they are concerned by the state's ill-considered policy toward local beer producers, setting the same playing field for producers of both beer and spirits and distillates. This had a significant impact on ]the competitiveness of beer producers  in relation to foreign mass production.

“This is also demonstrated by the fact that the volume of beer brewed in Latvia has shrunk more than twice in the last decade, while sales of spirits and distillates have increased significantly,” LNAB said in a statement to the media.
