Farmers and foresters to protest in Rīga next week

Next week, farmers will protest alongside representatives of the forestry sector at the Cabinet of Ministers, as reported by the society “Farmers' Saeima” February 28.

The protest is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5.

Juris Lazdiņš, Chairman of the Board of the Farmers Zemnieku Saeima, said that farmers in the protest will draw the government's attention to the risk that behind the slogans of the European Union's (EU) green initiative actually lie the burdens of privately owned agricultural land, which causes and will cause huge losses to Latvian farmers.

“Our request is to prevent restrictions on land use at the national level if adequate financial resources do not follow them,” Lazdiņš said.

Meanwhile Latvian forest owners and employees of forestry and timber industry companies will hold a protest to draw attention to the long-ignored problems affecting Latvian forest owners and forest sector workers. Representatives of the Society of Forest Owners said the industry faces unfair treatment at both the Latvian and European levels. One of the most painful issues, among others, is the compensation of forest owners whose forest lands are transferred to nature conservation.

Protest organizers are demanding that the government provide for fair compensation, as well as not create new areas with restrictions on economic activity until fair compensation is in place.
