Foreign visitor number in Latvia continues to fall

According to data published March 15 by the Central Statistical Bureau, in January 2021 the number of foreign and resident visitors comprised 37.8 thousand, which is 76.9 % less than in January 2020. 

As compared to January of the previous year, the number of nights spent by visitors has reduced by 76.3 % and comprised 79.3 thousand nights.

Still, due to the limited travel opportunities, also in 2021 the number of visitors hosted at accommodation establishments continues to reduce – compared to December, the number of visitors has dropped by 11.9 %.

In January 2021 the number of resident visitors comprised 30.5 thousand, which is 42.3 % less than in January 2020. The number of nights spent by residents has reduced by 38.3 % and comprised 59.8 thousand.

Latvian visitors stayed mostly in Riga (35 %), Jūrmala (9.2 %), Liepāja (5.9 %), Madona municipality (5.5 %), Amata municipality (3.5 %), Daugavpils (3.1 %) and Kuldīga municipality (2.7 %).

In January 2021 the number of foreign visitors comprised 7.3 thousand, which is 93.4 % less than in January 2020. Number of nights spent by them comprised 19.5 thousand – a drop of 91.8 %. The majority of foreign visitors came from Russia (1 thousand), Germany (0.6 thousand), Estonia (0.6 thousand), Lithuania (0.6 thousand), Poland (0.6 thousand) and United Kingdom (0.4 thousand).

Most foreign visitors were staying in Riga – 82.3 %, Jūrmala – 2.7 %, Liepāja – 2.4 %, Sigulda municipality – 2.1 %, Mārupe municipality – 1.9 %.
