Latvia makes bringing excise goods from Russia and Belarus harder

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On July 14, the Saeima amended the excise tax law in the second and final reading, prolonging the interval between legally transporting excise goods from Russia or Belarus for self-consumption.

Until now, it was allowed to take excise goods for self-consumption across the border once a week. The amendment extended this period to once in 30 days.

The changes have been made in order to prevent Latvian nationals from going to Russia and Belarus to purchase certain excise goods in view of the geopolitical situation, as explained in the amendment.

As reported earlier, despite security warnings, Latvian residents are rather keen to travel to Belarus, many with the intent to go shopping.

The changes will take effect on the day following the announcement.
