Until now, it was allowed to take excise goods for self-consumption across the border once a week. The amendment extended this period to once in 30 days.
The changes have been made in order to prevent Latvian nationals from going to Russia and Belarus to purchase certain excise goods in view of the geopolitical situation, as explained in the amendment.
As reported earlier, despite security warnings, Latvian residents are rather keen to travel to Belarus, many with the intent to go shopping.
The changes will take effect on the day following the announcement.
