Latvia's Minister for Economics Jānis Vitenbergs and Estonian Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Taavi Aas have both signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the project to set up a high-capacity offshore wind park of at least 700-1000 megawatts. The joint project will start with developing and exploring the area to set up the wind site.
In August this year, when the Memorandum had just been developed, Vitenbergs (“KPV LV”) told LETA that the development of wind energy in the coming decade is very important for the Baltic States. A joint operation of the offshore wind park in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga could bring considerable economic benefits and contribute to the energy security of both countries by diversifying energy supply sources.
As previously reported, the potential of Latvia developing wind energy has been on the table for a while, with former Economics Minister Ralfs Nemiro and President Egils Levits raising the matter for international debate in 2019.
