Kristaps Krūmiņš, member of the LP Board, said that the number of commercial cargo and e-commerce shipments have increased in recent years, but the volume of traditional mail services are reduced.
"Traditional mailings, such as letter correspondence and the press, are on a steady decline from year to year. Consequently, it is not the traditional segment that makes this additional space necessary. But, for example, this year the volume has increased by around 50% in the segment of commercial cargo [..]. And the other segment, it's more related to the e-commerce segment, different types of Internet purchases. They have very high seasonality and Covid-19 introduces different types of distortions, it is still observed,” Krūmiņš said.
As the volume of commercial cargo and international shipments increases, Latvian Post has decided to build a new complex of nearly 8,000 square meters in volume with an automated sorting line. Latvian Postal Board member Krūmiņš said that the company has been feeling the lack of premises for several years now.
Latvian Post plans to organize a procurement for construction next year, and construction jobs could start in the second half of next year.
