There is no understanding on what the tariffs shall be. The Chairman of the board of Latvian Press Publishers Association Guntars Līcis said that if the volume of press delivery falls, all other postal service costs will increase.
If there are no grants from the state, Līcis said: "Then all postal service costs will grow, the Latvian Post will dismiss about 600 people. The situation looks grim. How it manifests itself to publishers, I wouldn't even want to predict. I would like to emphasize that people outside Riga have the right to receive different services and information equivalent to other people in the country, and I think that one of the functions of the state is to meet the needs of their citizens."
On the question whether the survival of regional media is at risk without grants, Līcis conceded their survival was possible but the question remains on what will fund them. "The issue is independence of the media, that media is able to provide objective, unbiased information," he said.
