Latvians still actively subscribe to printed press

Latvian residents do not significantly change the tradition of subscribing to press over the years, Māris Vilcāns, Chairman of the Latvian Postal Service (LP) Board, told Latvian Radio September 30.

A traditional subscription campaign will start October 1 with the slogan Apetīte rodas lasot, or "The appetite [for reading] comes with reading". Vilcāns said that there are annual concerns about a decline in subscription volume, but the real situation is encouraging.

“It's a known tradition and we expect it to continue as long as possible. Each year, we are worried that the drop will be much larger, but in recent years it has been very minor or even close to zero. “So I would say that the tradition [to subscribe] is still in effect,” Vilcāns said.

This year, a total of more than 420 Latvian and foreign newspapers and magazines can be subscribed to. Vilcāns said that mostly Latvian residents order local press.

“And it's such a relatively constant trend. Yes, maybe a few years ago a little more foreign press appeared, but in general, this volume is small,” Vilcāns said.
