Retail trade saw strong growth in March

Latest calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to March 2021, in March 2022 total retail trade turnover in Latvia increased by 13.2 %. 

Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.2%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 24.4 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 12.8 %. In March precautions against the spread of Covid-19 were mitigated.

As compared to March 2021, the largest turnover rise was registered in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (2.5 times), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (63.5 %) and retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (40.2 %). A turnover drop was registered in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 17.3 %) and retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (2.6 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 29.5 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to February, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in March 2022 rose by 11.0 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.4%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 18.6 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 11.5 %.
