Retail trade took November hit in Latvia

Data released by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) December 29 show that, compared to November 2020, in November 2021 total retail trade turnover reduced by 3.7 % in Latvia. 

Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 0.3%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) decreased by 7.3 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 2.6 %.

Compared to November 2020, the most notable turnover growth was registered in retail sale via mail order or via Internet (35.1 %) and retail trade in pharmaceutical and medical goods (6.2 %). A turnover drop was recorded in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (of 15.5 %), retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (14.9 %), as well as retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (14.6 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 5.9 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to October, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in November 2021 fell by 3.6 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices.  Compared to October, in November 2021 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) decreased by 5.4 %.

The figures were likely influenced by the fact that November included two weeks of Covid-prompted 'lockdown', with restrictions on retail trade partially eased on November 15.
