According to Riga Tourism Development Office spokeswoman Anna Blaua, Latvia’s capital destination received 15,627 votes compared to figures above 20,000 for Athens and Valetta, 30,000 for Lisbon and 40,000 for Bordeaux.
European Best Destinations is one of the world’s largest internet tourism platforms and this was the first time Riga undertook participation in the popularity contest among cities. A total of 20 selected cities competed for the prestigious titled ranking.
Following Riga as popular destinations were the Balkan attractions of Zagreb and Ljubjana, the Alpine wonders of Innsbruck, Italy’s urban spectacle Milan and Europe’s own multicolored capital Brussels.
