The Russian food safety authority, Rosselkhoznadzor has lifted a sprat import ban from two Baltic companies, Latvia's Karavela and Estonia's DGM Shipping AS, it said December 18.

Rosselkhoznadzor said the ban was lifted December 15.

"The decision on whether the ban on the remaining businesses will be lifted depends on the material presented by the appropriate institutions in Latvia and Estonia providng that violations are eliminated," the food authority said.

Russia has banned import of fish and fish products from Estonia and Latvia from June 4, 2015. Afterwards, the Latvian parliament gave its backing for quick-fire aid to save the canneries from going bankrupt.

Rosselkhoznadzor cited high levels of chemicals as the reason for the ban, but their decisions on food safety have a tendency to follow the political temperature in the Kremlin rather closely.
