In August actual unemployment rate in Latvia was 8.6%, registered – 8.2%

September 23 data of the Labor Force Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in August 2020 actual unemployment rate comprised 8.6 %, which is 0.3 percentage points more than in July. 

Unemployment rate registered by the State Employment Agency (NVD) accounted for 8.2 %, and, compared to July, it has not changed. Unemployment rate increase may be observed also when comparing the data to the August of the previous year – of 2.5 percentage points in actual unemployment rate and 2.3 percentage points in registered unemployment rate.

In August 2020 there were 84 thousand unemployed in Latvia, which is 2.6 thousand less than in July and 24.5 thousand more than in the respective period of the previous year. During the last 6 months since the declaration of emergency situation, compared to the actual monthly unemployment data of February 2020, the number of unemployed has increased by 12.4 thousand.

Registered and actual unemployment rate is calculated based on the NVD data and results of LFS conducted by the CSB. NVD data are only on population of working age.
