The oldest and youngest face discrimination in job market, says association

Despite the lack of workforce in many sectors, there are two discriminated-against groups in the labour market in Latvia – young people freshly graduating school people over 50 years of age, Eva Selga, Chair of the Latvian Personnel Management Association, told Latvian Television January 10.

She said people over the age of 50 often feel that employers have a wish to recruit younger ones, and are afraid to lose their existing jobs.  Therefore, there is no tendency in Latvia for people to rush to change their jobs during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Similarly, another group discriminated against is young people who have no working experience and employers often avoid recruiting them because they do not want to invest in training.

As regards the situation in the labor market during the Covid-19 pandemic, Selga said that there are currently two main issues: whether the employee will want to work onsite or remotely, and whether the employee has a Covid-19 vaccination certificate.  She added that the pandemic changed the working environment, relations, and structure. Remote work will be here to stay and managers will have to acquire skills to manage employees whether they are onsite, remote or part-time.

Selga said that because of these changes, work will be more oriented toward results and mutual trust, but it requires discipline from employees and the ability to rely on subordinates from managers.
