Heavy goods vehicles banned from some Rīga streets

Significant changes in traffic organization have been made in Riga, which will prohibit the movement of freight transport through the city center from now on, announced the municipality's Department of Space and Mobility.

Necessary road signs have already been placed and henceforth freight traffic is prohibited in both directions:

  • on the Stone Bridge (Akmens tilts)
  • on a section of Krasta iela from the Salu Bridge to Ģenerāļa Radziņa krastmala
  • from Ģenerāļa Radziņa krastmala to 13. janvāri iela;
  • on part of 11.novembra krastmala from 13. janvāra iela to Vanšu Bridge;
  • on part of Eksporta iela from Vanšu Bridge to Hanzas iela.

"One of the goals of the municipality is to free the city center from heavy goods vehicles, improving the environmental condition and the quality of the urban environment as a whole. Now this is possible, because by opening the Eastern highway to traffic, we can direct freight transport along the bypass road," said Olafs Pulks (New Unity), chairman of the Rīga Traffic and Transport Committee.

The map below shows the completely banned routes in red, while those in purple are routes that HGVs cannot use on weekdays between 16:00 and 19:00.

Riga municipality calls on drivers to be attentive and take into account the new traffic organization changes. Hauliers will see their options to cross the River Daugava in Rīga effectively halved and it should quickly be evident if the re-routing rules create additional congestion at the Southern and Salu bridges.
