Rail Baltica work at future airport station passes important stage

One section of the construction of the railway project “Rail Baltica” has been completed around the Rīga Airport – the construction of the base piles for the railway station building and adjacent infrastructure, the European Railway Lines (EDZL) said May 18.

A total of 534 support piles have been driven into the ground for the future “Rail Baltica” station at the airport.

According to the company, it will be a unique building in Latvia, lifting 4.5 kilometres of track above ground so as not to disrupt car traffic to the airport. The silhouette of the new station building will rise high above ground, too.

The piles must withstand high loads and are larger than normal – for the ramp, they are 1.18 meters in diameter and 33 meters in depth to reach a stable layer of dolomite.

The construction of the “Rail Baltica” station and related infrastructure at Riga airport is carried out by an international association “B.S.L. Infra”, consisting of the Austrian company “Swietelsky AG” and Latvian construction companies – Binders and AS “LNK Industries”.
