Latvian Post plans cuts

Latvian Post (Latvijas pasts, LP), the national state-owned postal service plans to reduce the number of its mail departments this year, said Marcis Vilcāns, Chairman of the company's board of directors, in an interview to Latvian Television on March 22.

He acknowledged that it is not yet known how many mail departments will be closed, but hopefully the number would be as low as possible.

"We look at the profitability of the mail departments. We expect the [number] to be as small as possible. But if we see that we have no revenue or customers for a long time in these mail departments, then we are forced to look for other alternatives," Vilcāns said.

He said that one of the alternatives to the issue of consignments is the setting-up of parcel machines, whose number would reach 240 by the end of the year.

Vilcāns said that the company's turnover last year, compared to the previous year, decreased slightly and was around €100 million. Latvijas pasts worked with a profit last year, but its size has yet to be confirmed.
