Over 60 car accidents recorded Thursday morning in Latvia

On the morning of Thursday, November 23, with snow and ice covering most of Latvia's roads, 61 accidents were recorded between six in the morning and noon, with four people injured, Latvian Radio reported.

As explained by the State Police (VP), the number of crashes on Thursday morning was slightly higher than other mornings. A major crash happened outside Bauska, where a car collided with a truck. Firefighters had to free a man from the wreckage of the car after the collision. Traffic has already been restored at the crash site.

It was particularly difficult to drive in the morning in Vidzeme, Latgale, and Zemgale, as reported by the Latvian State Roads (LVC) Ltd.

The Emergency Medical Service said the number of injuries had not increased on Thursday morning but reminded residents, especially elderly people, to be careful during slippery weather.

Meanwhile, Latvian Radio observed that traffic intensity in Rīga has not decreased due to ice and snow, however, according to the public transport company Rīgas Satiksme, public transport is running late. Buses are delayed for about 20 minutes and trolley buses longer.

Some passenger trains were also delayed. The most complicated situation has emerged on the Jelgava line, where train movement is also hampered by platform modernization works, Latvian Radio found.

In order to further improve driving conditions, 107 Winter Service Technical units of the State JSC “Latvijas Autocelu Uzturetajs” are working.
