Electric scooter parking in central Rīga to be restricted

Electric scooters in the center of Rīga will only be allowed to be parked in specially designated areas. In the historic center of the city, the speed limit will be 20 kilometers per hours (elsewhere it is 25 km/h). This regulation in the city is set to be adopted by the City Council on Wednesday, March 27.

The new rules for electric scooters in the capital are set to be in place as of May 1 and will apply to rental electric scooters. As of June, the municipality plans to set these rules for Elizabetes Street and will gradually introduce them throughout the territory of the historic center of Riga.

There are now 40 areas in Riga specially designed for parking electric scooters. It is planned to increase the number of these areas.

The new rules will stipulate that in the speed limit zone in the historic centre of Rīga the speed of the vehicle may not exceed 20 km per hour. They are currently 25 kilometers per hour, and 15 km/h in parks. In parks, the limit of 15 km/h will remain.

A misplaced vehicle will need to be moved within three hours by the service provider. Otherwise, there will be a fine.

The municipality will publish speed restriction zones and parking exclusion zones on the “Geo Riga” portal in the “Traffic and Mobility” section of the website.
