Snow annually takes Latvia by surprise

On Tuesday, there is a lot of snow in Latvia, as it often happens during the winter, and as usual, it has caused some disruptions in traffic.

Given the intense snowfall last night, driving was difficult throughout the country in the morning and still is in many places.

Road maintenance takes place in priority order according to maintenance classes. The busiest sections of roads are being cleared first, but it will not be possible to completely clear all. Driving conditions on the country's local roads can therefore be particularly difficult at present.

The state Fire and Rescue Service said it was working in everyday mode on Tuesday. The Emergency Medical Service is also working as usual. In contrast, the State Police have more work on the streets on Tuesday.

State Police spokeswoman Līna Bagdone said: "Today between 6 AM and 11 AM the state police recorded a total of 39 road accidents in the state without injured persons and three accidents with injured persons. Such figures are slightly higher than in everyday weather conditions."

Public transport is delayed due to difficult driving conditions.

The Road Transport Administration informed that on Tuesday regional buses may be delayed up to 50 minutes throughout Latvia. Passengers have been asked to count on longer travel times if they have to take buses.

Public transport may also be delayed in Rīga on Tuesday. Rīgas Satiksme said that buses might be delayed for up to 30 minutes, trolley buses up to 20 minutes, and trams up to 10 minutes. Passengers have been urged to schedule extra time on the road.

As reported, Rīgans are also asked to work remotely as far as possible to reduce congestion.
