Driver's licenses to visually change next year in Latvia

As of January 2, 2023, the State JSC Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) will start issuing new model driver documents, including driving licences, with security features embedded with the current latest technologies, the CSDD said on December 22.

The new model driver's documents will contain a colorful photograph embedded with laser-grafting technology. In line with the capabilities of the latest technologies, other security features, tactile, detailed engravings, and ultraviolet images, will also be upgraded. The safety features identified will be embedded in all types of driver documents, not only in the driving license, said the Directorate.

The transition to the issuance of the new type of driver's documents will take place gradually:

  • From January 2 – Riga CSDD, Daugavpils CSDD, Liepāja CSDD and Valmiera CSDD;
  • From January 3 – Jelgava CSDD and Rēzekne CSDD;
  • From January 4 , – to Talsi CSDD and Gulbene CSDD;
  • From January 5, in Jēkabpils CSDD and Ventspils CSDD.

All driver's licenses issued so far are valid until the date stated.

When changing this document, it is imperative to verify the validity of the health check. The fee for changing a license is EUR 22.05.

The driving license is valid for driving both in Latvia and abroad.
