Growth in annual figures of freight and passenger transport in Latvia

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data published on September 2 show that in the 1st half of 2022, compared to the 1st half of 2021, passenger traffic by all modes of transport has grown. Freight traffic by road transport has reduced, but in other sectors – increased.

Passenger transport

In the first half of 2022, 75.7 million passengers were carried by land passenger transport, which is 33.3 % more than in the first half of 2021 and 3 % more than in the first half of 2020, but 37 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019.

The number of passengers carried by rail transport comprised 6.9 million passengers, which is 46.4 % more than a year ago and 12.8 % more than in the 1st half of 2020, but 23.1 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019 before the pandemic. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 46.3 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport – 4.8 times.

The number of passengers carried by regular bus traffic lines comprised 43.2 million passengers, which is 32.5 % more than in the 1st half of 2021 and 2.6 % more than in the 1st half of 2020, but 38.5 % less than in 2019. The number of passengers carried in national lines increased by 32.4 %, but the number of passengers carried on international lines – 4 times.

The number of passengers carried by trolleybuses comprised 13.5 million passengers, a rise of 24.2 %, but by trams – 12.1 million passengers, a growth of 40.7 %. Compared to the 1st half of 2020, the number of passengers carried by trolleybuses fell by 2.2 %, but by trams – rose by 5.4 %. In turn, the number of passengers carried by trolleybuses and trams, as compared to 2019, has reduced by 33 % and 42 %, respectively.

In the 1st half of 2022, 165.7 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 65.8 % more than in the 1st half of 2021, but 19.9 % less than in the 1st half of 2020 and 65.7 % less than in the first six months of 2019. At Riga Passenger Terminal ferry traffic was still closed, at Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 129.8 thousand passengers, which is 57.5 % more, but at Liepāja port – 35.9 thousand passengers, 2 times more than a year ago.

In the first half of 2022, 2.2 million passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport, which is 5.5 times more than in the first half of 2021 and 68.4 % more than in the first half of 2020, but 37.5 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019.

Freight transport

49.5 million tonnes of freight were carried by land and pipeline transport, a rise of 1.1 million tonnes or 2.3 % compared to a year ago and 6.4 % more than in the 1st half of 2020, but 13.5 % less than in 2019.

Rail transport freights comprised 12.1 million tonnes, which is 17.8 % more than in the 1st half of 2021, 3.8 % more than in the 1st half of 2020, but 45 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019. National freights by rail comprised 0.7 million tonnes – 6.8 % less. In international traffic, the volume of freight transported by rail comprised 11.4 million tonnes, a growth of 19.7 %. Of which export freight transport – 1.4 million tonnes, 43.2 % more, import freight transport – 8.7 million tonnes, a rise of 35.9 %, but goods in transit – 1.3 million tonnes, 40.2 % less. As compared to the 1st half of 2021, transportation of freights via Latvian ports comprised 8.6 million tonnes, which is 54.6 % more.

37.2 million tonnes of freights were carried by road transport, which is 1.1 % less than in the previous year, but 9.4 % more than in the 1st half of 2020 and 10.2 % more than in 2019. Transportation of national freights comprised 28.9 million tonnes, 1.3 % more. Transportation of international freights accounted for 8.3 million tonnes – 8.8 % less. Of which export freight transport comprised 2.7 million, 5.1 % more. Transportation of import freight fell by 1.6 % and comprised 1.8 million tonnes of freight. Cross-trade and cabotage freights comprised 3.8 million tonnes, 19 % less than in the previous year. 78.9 % of total road freights were transportation for hire or reward. They fell by 2.3 %.

0.2 million tonnes of oil products were transported via main oil products pipeline, which is 60.4 % less than a year ago, 76.4 % less than in the 1st half 2020 and 86.8 % less than in the corresponding period of 2019.

In the 1st half of 2022 the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 23.6 million tonnes, which is 15.3 % more than in the previous year and 4.2 % more than in the corresponding period of 2020, but 27.1 % less than in the first six months of 2019. Freight turnover at Riga port was 11.3 million tonnes, 11.5 % more, at Ventspils port – 7.3 million tonnes or 25.4 % more, at Liepāja port – 3.9 million tonnes or 15.2 % more, but at minor ports – 1.1 million tonnes or 4.1 % less.

Airport “Rīga” loaded and unloaded 11 thousand tonnes of freights or 11.1 % less than in the first half of 2021, 10.9 % more than in the corresponding period of 2020 and 17.6 % less than in 2019.
