International shipments often delayed, says Latvian Post

International shipments via mail to Latvia are irregular, Mārcis Vilcāns,  Chair of Latvian Postal Service (Latvijas Pasts) told Latvian Television February 9.

There are no significant delays for domestic mail in Latvia – up to one day. “For example, we can't deliver at eight in the morning, but at the end of the day,” Vilcāns said.

For international shipments, however, the flow is irregular. Due to airline restrictions, it is necessary to rearrange the direction of consignments.

“As we see, the limits on air travel are variable all the time – something is emerging, something is disappearing. So it's reorganized,” Vilcāns explained.

This applies to both shipments from Latvia and to Latvia. For example, in one day, Latvian Post can receive two-weeks' worth of consignments.

The head of Latvian Post also said that there are sometimes queues on the streets at post offices due to restrictions on how many people can be on the premises at any one time.
