Latvia might have penalties for minor speeding

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Instead of a warning for speeding up to 10 kilometers per hour (km/h) above the permitted speed limit, Latvia could introduce fines, said Transport Ministry on July 22.

For exceeding the speed limit by up to 10 km/h, the fine would be EUR 10.

State police traffic department representative Arturs Smilga said that 85% of offenses registered by speed cameras are 10 to 20 km/h above the speed, so people think it is a normal practice. According to him, among 18 other European countries surveyed, Latvia is the only one that doesn't have a fine for small-scale speeding.

For the implementation of the new rule, further discussions are needed with Justice Ministry and it needs to be adopted by the Saeima.
