Rīga airport passenger turnover down by 71% this year

Take note – story published 3 years ago

This year so far, Riga International Airport serviced 1.87 million passengers, which is nearly 71% less than last year, airport spokeswoman Laura Kulakova told Latvian Radio October 23.

In the summer, there were a little more passengers than in the fall: this year in July, the airport serviced 77% fewer passengers than in July 2019, but in September, compared with September last year, the drop was 84%.

In October, compared to last October, the drop has already reached 86.6%, and the month is not over, so there is no bright future for the airport.

The number of passengers was affected by the outbreak of COVID-19, both in Latvia and elsewhere in the world, by restrictions and also by the 10-day self-isolation requirement when returning from many countries with high incidence of COVID-19.

Currently, 38 cities can be reached from Riga airport.

International forecasts predict that the aviation sector could return to 2019 figures in 2024-2025 if the travel restrictions imposed due to COVID-19 end.
