Rīga public transport fares could be 'revised'

Due to the increase in costs, the municipal transport company Rīgas satiksme is expecting an additional EUR 3-5 million in support by the municipality. Service prices could also change, said Džineta Innusa, head of the company, on Latvian Radio on June 13.

Last year, Rīgas satiksme had a profit of €3 million. Innusa said it was a very good result and added it is 'more of a formal sum of revenue and expenses.' The company has to invest these funds in trolley and tram infrastructure, said Innusa.

Because of rising costs, including fuel costs, the company is hoping for support from the municipality. These could be €3-5 million that would be needed this year because of cost increases.

It is also possible that the fare cost could be 'revised,' said Innusa.  The aim is not only to raise but also to reduce prices in certain sections of services.

“At the moment, it is very carefully calculated and evaluated, but whether this will happen, I cannot say because it is also a political decision of the municipality. The local government shall approve ticket tariffs. But we are calculating this, of course,” Innusa said.
